Micaela Barrett and Alberto Ramos: April 2019

We are excited to welcome Micaela Barrett and Alberto Ramos to Ottawa for the first time in April.

Micaela and Alberto are the founders of The Cleveland Tango School. Based out of New York and the Caribbean before moving to Cleveland, they have taught and performed at the Toronto Tango Experience, Pittsburgh Tango Week, Windy City Tango Festival, and Detroit’s Mini-Tango Fest, among others.

Their dance is known for its musicality and playfulness, while their teaching explores the history and traditions of tango. Micaela and Alberto dedicate themselves to helping students create more comfortable, interesting, and grounded tandas throughout the night.

Jewel will be in charge registration for this event. Want to register? Have questions? Talk to her in person at Tuesday Milongas and Sunday Prácticas, or email her at pr@siempretango.ca.

To ensure the best experience for all participants, all classes will be role-balanced. Please pre-register and pay in full to reserve your spot.

Friday, April 26
Venue: Geneva Hall at Knox Presbyterian (120 Lisgar Street)

6:30 – 7:30 PM
Workshop 1: Exploring the Embace (All Levels)
Actively engaging with another person is one of the most amazing aspects of tango. It is also one of the hardest to master. Using a variety of exercises and tools, we’ll help students create a more comfortable/expressive embrace.

7:30 – 11:00 PM
Welcome Potluck Milonga

Featuring a performance by Micaela and Alberto. Bring a dish to share with friends! Cover: $15 per person.

Saturday, April 27
Venue: The Preschool Room at McNabb Community Centre, 180 Percy Street

3:00 – 4:30 PM
Workshop 2: Finding the Turn (Int.-Adv.)
A blend of technique and conceptual musicality. Knowing how to turn is great; knowing when to turn is even better. Create a stronger salon turn, and use them to interpret the song on the dance floor!

4:45 – 6:15 PM
Workshop 3: Leader/Follower Sacadas – Every Which Way but Up (Int.-Adv.)

Elegant sequences to train sacadas for both roles. Aesthetic principles and structure are key to executing the movements with style. Excellent for upping your practice or simply adding some flash to your next tanda!

Sunday, April 28
Venue: Siempre Tango (317 Chapel Street)

2:00 – 3:30 PM
Workshop 4: Milonga Lisa v. Milonga Traspié (All Levels)

If you hightail it to the bar when a milonga tanda hits, then this class may be for you. We will explore the embrace, the rhythms, and a few simple figures for the social dance floor.

4:00 – 5:30 PM
Workshop 5: Following the Follow, Leading the Lead (All Levels)

Using some tools from the salon dancer playbook, we ‘ll track lead/follow energies and create more agency within each role.

7:00 – 9:30 PM
Farewell Practilonga

Say goodbye to our visitors and enjoy using what you’ve learned. Micaela and Alberto will be available to answer questions. Cover: $10.
