We are excited to welcome Melina Mistral to Ottawa for the first time, on July 27 – 28. She is so enjoyable to dance with as both an empowered follower and as a leader, and has earned a reputation as a highly effective, caring teacher. She will be offering workshops for followers AND couples, as well as private lessons.
From her website:
“Praised for her elegance and power as a dancer, respected as a pedagogical and dedicated teacher, Melina’s passion for Argentine Tango is undeniable. When she isn’t traveling throughout North America or Europe, performing in festivals, giving workshops or even DJ’ing, she works in Montreal…. Taking her first Tango steps as a teenager, in her neighbourhood studio Montango (where she taught for many years), Melina fell in love with the dance…. Melina’s body knowledge came from years of martial arts training and sports. Impatient for more coaching, she continued her studies with teachers from all over the world and took many classical ballet and Pilates classes to complement her dance. She has since then worked with different dancers, such as Ney Melo (NYC), Cristian Sierra (Chile) and Raphaël Baron (MTL)…. She has also explored both the leader and follower’s roles in the dance, making her a strong solo teacher and versatile dancer.”
You can view videos of her performances here.
Jewel will be in charge registration for this event. Want to register? Have questions? Talk to her in person at Tuesday Milongas and Sunday Prácticas, or email her at email@example.com.
To ensure the best experience for all participants, Sunday’s classes will be role-balanced. Please pre-register and pay in full to reserve your spot.
Saturday, July 27
Venue: Studio B at the Ottawa Dance Directive (Arts Court, 2 Daly Avenue)
Note: Saturday’s workshops are for followers only. Registrations will be limited to 16 to 18 followers for an optimal learning experience.
12:00 – 1:15 PM
Followers’ Technique I (All levels) – $28 per person
As Melina often says in her classes, “If you do not try and then fail, then you will never be able to do it.” Pushing your body in movements that it isn’t used to and looking like a duck trying to skate as you do them is necessary to eventually look and feel good while you dance. Embellishments are part of it all and with her series of exercises, Melina will bring new confidence, expression, elegance, and power to your dance.
1:15 – 2:30 PM
Followers’ Technique II (All levels) – $28 per person
Added technique, embellishments, and fun in the second class of follower’s technique!
Sunday, July 28
Venue: The Robert Studio at Routher Community Centre (172 Guigues Avenue)
Note: Sunday’s workshops are open to leaders AND followers.
1:00 – 2:30 PM
The Reverse Cross (Intermediate and up) – $35 per person
Most Tango dancers practice only one type of cross, which is lead from the parallel or cross system, but the beauty of Tango is the array of possibilities based on improvisation. What if you reversed that cross or mirrored it? Lead it from a side step or a forward step for the follower? If you want to have fun deconstructing a step you thought you had mastered, come check out this class!
2:30 – 4:00 PM
All Types of Walks (All levels) – $35 per person
Many students say they get bored of “just” walking, but they’re actually bored with doing the same walk over and over. Each song and orchestra brings a different story, a different emotion, and a different cadencia that will affect and change the steps you chose and the type of walk you use. Focusing on three different orchestras, you will work on different types of walks, in different systems and different sequences. This understanding is what will bring your Tango to a whole other level.
7:00 – 9:30 PM
Farewell Practilonga – $10 per person
Say goodbye to our visitor and enjoy using what you’ve learned. Melina will be available to answer questions.
