2024 in Review

A message from Jewel:

A big thank you to each and every student who has passed through our figurative doors. You trust us to help you on your tango journey, and we look forward to continue that journey in 2025.

Grand acknowledgements to the teaching crew: Marcel Laurin, Leanna Falkenhagen, Isabelle Oppenheim, and Vince Wood. I cannot ask for better colleagues to face a group’s curiosity!

Thank you to our welcome crew, Martine Gagnon and Elizabeth Loan. With your presence and attention to detail, you make every event a warm, special occasion.

A special thank you to my tango comrade, Rahim Noudehaki. Thank you for your trust, conusel, reciprocity, and ambition. I look forward to making the Ottawa Tango Festival a raging success with you.

Thanks to Tracey Peever for her advice and hard work in maintaining the Ottawa Tango Calendar as a community resource, as well as the volunteers taking care of that site and the local Ottawa/Gatineau Facebook group.

Thanks to all the Milonga La Capital DJs that provided the soundtrack to our enjoyment:

  • Bruno Afonso
  • Alexis Boileau
  • Irina Isenko
  • Tiniko Natsvlichvili
  • Cristina Vasuta

Many thanks to this year’s guest artists who broadened our tango horizons and who are delightful to be around:

  • Hyperion Tango Ensemble
  • Virginia Vasconi and Jaimes Friedgen
  • Marjolayne Auger and Pancho Cloutier
  • Sandra Naccache and Jorge López

Special thanks to Francis Caron for both coming in as a guest artist and for being endlessly patient with me.

A thousand thanks to Tomás Howlin for his inspiring mentorship and his confidence in our continuing collaboration.

More thanks to Isabelle Oppenheim and Cristina Cairncross for hosting our guest artists.

I continue on my own learning journey as a dancer and a teacher, so I must thank

  • Magdalena Gutierrez and German Ballejo
  • Lily Chenlo and Leo Sardella
  • Vanessa Gauch and Esref Tekinalp
  • Tomás Howlin’s One-to-One Montreal Team

Personal thanks to Ludmila Bazarov and Yutong Ji for making events a lot more fun to attend.

Even more thanks to these entities who have brought us out of our regular duties:

  • Agustina Videla and the Social Tango Project
  • Alejandro Villalobos and the Queer Tango Festival Montreal
  • NAC Dance

And we could not do what we do without the hidden help of:

  • George and Jason Solanas at the Westboro Masonic Hall
  • Lana Morton and the Ottawa Dance Directive
  • Lee Jacobs and the Old Ottawa East CAG
  • Marianne Rasmus and Knox Presbyterian Chruch
  • Michel Antoine
